BIO

Born in Toronto, Cathy studied Graphic Arts at the Ontario College of Art and worked as a freelance illustrator for scientific and other publications, She found her way to Newfoundland (in 1999) by a circuitous route: British Columbia, Pennsylvania and New Brunswick with some short stops in Scotland, England and France. Along the way, technical work and illustration gradually gave way to painting, drawing, printmaking and forays into several craft mediums.

She exhibited in solo and group exhibitions and was represented in local galleries. Usually recognized as a watercolour painter, she is currently enjoying a divergence into multi medium play. For example her exhibition, COLLECTIONS-CONNECTIONS at Two Whales Coffee Shop brought together observations and collections from coastal walks by using a variety of mediums combined with printmaking.

A member of the Nature Printing Society, she continues to make prints from items collected from nature. Most recently an art book illustrated with nature prints and drawings was a winner in the 2024 Newfoundland and Labrador Arts and Letters Awards Program and one of her nature prints was selected for the new Mental Health and Addictions Centre in St. John’s.

Her work is in the collections of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, the City of St. John's and on walls in several countries. She lives in St. John’s and is a frequent summer resident in Champney’s West, Trinity Bay, to be seen exploring the shoreline on foot or in a canoe with her husband Bill.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Painting on Two Shores A collection of watercolour paintings that explore the visual contrasts in two dissimilar communities. But are they so different? What connects us?

Currently there is a considerable amount of thought (ideas) and anxiety about the differences between people, countries, traditions, religions and cultures in general.

The paintings of France and Newfoundland in this exhibition illustrate the geographical differences while considering the cultural similarities. It seems a good time to celebrate our connections.
